Mac Site of the Moment
This is my space to highlight some of the most useful and interesting Macintosh
sites on the net. This link is changed periodically though I haven't yet
determined the exact periodicity (hence the rather non-descript "Moment").
And the current Mac Site of the Moment is: (Drum roll please...)
The Complete
Conflict Compendium
The Complete Conflict Compendium is an attempt to create a detailed listing
of all of the software conflicts on the Macintosh, and how to fix them.
(cf. Prometheus, Tantulus, Sisyphus). You can search by symptom, product
name, Mac model or System Software. Each conflict is assigned a confidence
rating from 1 to 5 where 1 is dubious and 5 is completely certain. Contact
information and links to the software vendors is provided.
If you'd like to nominate a site for Mac Site of the Moment email
the URL to me and let me know why you think it's cool. If you'd like to
see Mac Sites of Previous Moments just follow this link.

What's New?
I've updated the periodicals
page. I was amazed at the number of electronic zines that are still
using proprietary formats like DocMaker and Acrobat and don't have real
web sites. In 1996 there are only three formats that matter:
- HTML on the web
- ASCII text in email
- Paper in my mailbox
Anything else wastes people's time and makes them far less likely to read
the journal. Dead-tree-based journals are doing a far better job of transitioning
to the web than most electronic journals. It's time for e-zines to get with
the program. In the near future I'll be removing all periodicals from my
pages that aren't available primarily in one of these three formats, and
I may go so far as to remove any publication that does not place its entire
contents on the web.
The Mailing List page
has been updated.
The vendor directory has
been updated and now contains over 1800 listings.
Studio B has published an interview
with me you may find interesting.
In the Summer of 1996, starting in June, this site is undergoing the most
massive updating and reorganization it's ever seen. There's going to be
new material here almost every day. The vendor directory is going to be
updated and verified and should reach 2000 vendors for the first time. The
FAQ lists will all be updated and revised and two new FAQ lists will be
added. A context sensitive search engine for the entire site will be installed,
you'll get an opportunity to hear what some other people are saying about
this site. and a lot, lot more. Stay tuned. If you have suggestions or comments,
now is the time to let me know.

About the Logo
The winner of the Well Connected Mac Art Contest and the artist who produced
the wonderful logo you see at the top of this page is Matthew William Schroeder.
Matthew is a sophomore at Penn State University. Although his technical
major is Geography/Geographical Information Systems (GIS), his emphasis
is in multimedia authoring and graphic design. He is currently involved
in several projects, including the construction of two CD-ROMs: one to teach
botany to middle-school students, and another to aid in the instruction
of a college-level course. In his spare time, he does freelance graphic
design. He can be reached via email at mws147@psu.edu.
Matthew also designed an alternate vision for the entire page that I've
elected not to use in the interests of keeping this page reasonably quick
to download. However if you have a fast connection take a look at it.
Matthew won four packages of Clip Art from T/Maker and Docucomp and Word
for Word from MasterSoft. Congratulations Matthew!.
What's Coming Down the Road?
I have many plans for this site. However experience has taught me that those
plans are almost completely uncorrelated with what actually gets done. Still
the site is growing rapidly, and in the near future you may or may not see
- Pages for essential and useful software.
- FAQ lists split into more manageable pieces, perhaps a section or
a single FAQ on each page.
- Better previewing of vendor submissions
- A way to update vendor listings
- A more categorical approach to the vendor listings
If there's something you think should be here that isn't, tell me. If
there's something you think might better be done differently, talk to me
about it. And certainly if you find a mistake or something doesn't work
the way it should, let me know. This site is still very much a work in progress.
Your comments are greatly appreciated. Please direct them to elharo@shock.njit.edu.
However my time is severely overloaded, and I cannot respond to all messages
personally.
